By November 2020, Baroness had been in the studio recording their sixth studio album for an early 2021 release. Frontman and guitarist John Baizley has stated that nearly 30 songs were written for the record, telling Metal Sucks in September 2020: "We started doing Zoom meetings every Monday night, and mostly that's because we've been writing since March or April.
