Il est des groupes qui, par leur propension à changer de membres ou de style, donnent du fil à retordre à quiconque souhaiterait les classer. The Gathering est l’un d’eux. Créé en 1989 autour des frères Rutten, le groupe néerlandais fait ses armes du côté du doom metal avec notamment Always…, premier album sorti en 1992. Mais rapidement les bataves s’éloignent du growl de leurs débuts et explorent les sonorités gothiques portées par la voix d’Anneke Van Giersbergen, fraîchement recrutée derrière le micro. Sort alors Mandylion en 1995, chef-d’œuvre de metal gothique aux influences rock et trip-hop qui fera leur succès sur le continent européen. Un album à la suite duquel la bande des frères Rutten continue d’explorer, malgré le départ de Van Giersbergen en 2008 pour des aventures en solo. Mais presque vingt ans après son départ, et trente ans après la sortie de Mandylion, The Gathering retrouve Van Giersbergen pour une tournée anniversaire de l’album qui a fait leur succès. Toujours aussi inclassables, ils investissent la scène Temple du Hellfest pour un set hypnotique.
