Des œuvres d'Honegger, Ravel, Rachmaninov et Kurt Weill brossent en filigrane un panorama saisissant de cette époque. Le directeur musical de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Aziz Shokhakimov, propose un programme résolument marqué par la modernité et l’audace. Pour cette soirée « Années 30 », tour d’horizon d’un Paris marqué par une création musicale foisonnante. AvecPacific 231, Honegger crée une œuvre phare de la musique moderne. La référence à la locomotive à vapeur doit moins être comprise comme une description propre que comme une source d'inspiration pour une pièce à l'immense énergie rythmique et dotée d'une grande densité sonore. L’Orchestre invite la pianiste Anna Vinnitskaya, première lauréate du concours Reine Elisabeth en 2007 pour le très technique Concerto pour la main gauche de Ravel. Cette œuvre exigeante et virtuose fut écrite pour le pianiste autrichien Paul Wittgenstein, qui avait perdu son bras droit pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Le Concerto pour la main gauche, composé en parallèle du Concerto en sol est l’une des œuvres les plus jouées et appréciées de Maurice Ravel. Virtuosité toujours avec Rachmaninov et la Rhapsodie sur un thème de Paganini, Op.43. Si elle porte le nom de rhapsodie, l’œuvre est en vérité une série de variations sur le Caprice pour violon seul n° 24 de Niccolò Paganini. Peu habitué des grandes œuvres symphoniques, Kurt Weill a écrit sa Symphonie n°2entre 1933 et 1934, durant son exil à Paris. Créé en 1934 au Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam elle est oubliée puis "redécouverte" dans les années 1980. Kurt Weill livre ici une œuvre angoissée, résignée où perce malgré tout un souffle d’optimisme.
