Il a 10 ans quand il bricole sa première basse à partir d’une caisse et de câbles de freins de vélo. Installé à New York, il a su conquérir le cœur du public avec sa musique aux accents afro et son chant convoquant plus d’une langue. Le big band de la Radio de Francfort est placé sous la direction de Michael Philip Mossman. Richard Bona a treize ans quand il découvre Jaco Pastorius. Une révélation. La virtuosité du mythique bassiste de “Weather Report” inspire dès lors durablement le jeu du musicien camerounais. Cette plongée dans le jazz fusion va emmener Richard Bona vers d’autres rives. Il délaisse les nombreux instruments qu’il pratiquait pourtant depuis l’enfance pour se vouer corps et âme à la basse. Loin de se cantonner au jazz, il explore avec bonheur d’autres genres, mêlant funk, pop et world music. Imperturbable, Richard Bona creuse son sillon, du Cameroun à Paris en passant par l’Allemagne. Quand les autorités françaises refusent de prolonger son titre de séjour, il trace sa route, direction New York, où il vit encore aujourd’hui. Rejetant l’establishment musical, cet électron libre ne s’est jamais plié aux diktats du secteur. Son credo? Composer en suivant son cœur. Un cœur qui penche volontiers vers les exclus et les opprimés. Les nombreuses distinctions qui ont couronné ses albums prouvent qu’il avait vu juste. Aujourd’hui, Richard Bona s’est imposé comme une référence du jazz contemporain: jouer à ses côtés est un privilège dont beaucoup aimeraient pouvoir se targuer. De Herbie Hancock à Quincy Jones en passant par Chick Corea, Sting et Stevie Wonder, il a collaboré avec les plus grands.
