The idea was to create a space to showcase the artists whose tracks the Northern Irish DJ most likes to play – and always in combination with artwork by selected LGBTQI+ artists produced specially for the release. Even just the name is a direct appeal to the gay community, “Polari” having been the gay subculture’s code language in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Britain. Given that homosexual sex remained a criminal offence in England and Wales right up to 1967, this secret slang turned out to be of existential importance in enabling gays to reach out to each other. Cormac himself is a proud wearer of the Pride flag, which is perhaps what drew him to pulsating London when he decided to quit his much more rural home near Belfast in the early 2000s. In London he became a booker and resident of the legendary “Wet Your Self” parties, while these days he does the closing act for clubs like the Panorama Bar and Snax, where his sets have been known to last up to ten hours. All that has remained to him during the pandemic is his status as Rinse FM resident, although back in October he did get to do a set at Berlin’s Berghain-Garten when it reopened subject to strict social distancing regulations. Since September, however, he has been kept busy by his launch of Polari and release of its first very EP, “Hit Me” by Kiwi. In the past he has also made his own remixes as well as the EP “Perfect Time” for Correspondant, the label of his French counterpart Jennifer Cardini, who was also invited to contribute a set to tonight’s United We Stream. ________ Mit dem Label Polari ist ein, so Plattenchef Cormac, „multidisziplinäres Projekt“ entstanden. Der nordirische DJ veröffentlicht damit Produktionen seiner liebsten Kollegschaft, deren Tracks er selbst gerne spielt – stets in Kombination mit einem Artwork, das ausgewählte LGBTQI+-Kunstschaffende eigens fürs Release anfertigen. Bereits der Labelname ist eine offene Ansprache an die Gay-Community: „Polari“ galt nämlich im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert als geheime Sprache Homosexueller im Vereinigten Königreich. Bis 1967 wurde gleichgeschlechtlicher Sex in England und Wales unter Strafe gestellt, weswegen sich eine Geheimhaltung in Form eines "Secret Code" als praktisch überlebensnotwendig erwies. Die Pride-Flagge trägt Cormac jedenfalls stolz, weswegen es ihn vielleicht Anfang der 2000er ins aufregende London zog – ein Gegensatz zu seiner eher ländlichen Heimat nahe Belfast. In London wurde er Booker und Resident der legendären „Wet Your Self“-Partys; heutzutage macht er das Closing für Clubs wie die Panorama Bar und das Snax, in dessen Rahmen seine Sets auch gerne mal zehn Stunden dauern dürfen. Was ihm allerdings während dieser Pandemie bleibt ist sein Status als Rinse FM-Resident. Als der Berghain-Garten unter Hygienevorlagen wieder geöffnet hatte, spielte Cormac noch im Oktober wieder ein Set. Seit September ist er sicherlich auch gut beschäftigt mit der Arbeit als Polari-Chef, worüber bereits die Hit Me EP von Kiwi herausgebracht wurde. Cormac selbst fertigte in der Vergangenheit bereits Remixe und die Perfect Time EP fürs Correspondant Label seiner französischen Kollegin Jennifer Cardini an, welche auch für heute Abend von United We Stream für ein Set eingeladen wurde. _________ Cormac définit son label Polari comme un projet pluridisciplinaire. Le DJ d'Irlande du Nord y sort les productions de ses collègues préférés, en y associant toujours des œuvres d'art créées par des artistes LGBTQI+ en guise de pochette. Le nom du label est un appel explicite à la communauté gay : "Polari" est le nom donné à la langue secrète utilisée par les homosexuels au Royaume-Uni aux XIXe et XXe siècles, à une époque où les relations homosexuelles étaient proscrites et punies par la loi. Cormac porte fièrement le drapeau de la Fierté, ce qui explique peut-être pourquoi il a été attiré par l'effervescence de Londres au début des années 2000. A cette époque, il devient booker et résident des légendaires soirées "Wet Your Self".
