Sur la scène du Paramount Theater, les trois musiciens de Nirvana semblent portés par une énergie incontrôlable. Kurt Cobain, déjà hanté par ses démons, crache ses textes avec une rage désarmante. L’intro furieuse de "Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam", reprise du groupe écossais alternatif The Vaselines, plante le décor. La tension monte, atteignant des sommets sur "Smells Like Teen Spirit", hymne générationnel hurlé par une foule en transe. Dave Grohl, à la batterie, martèle chaque morceau comme si sa vie en dépendait tandis que Krist Novoselic soutient le tout avec sa basse lourde et hypnotique, uniquement jouée au médiator, l'une des futures signatures du son grunge. Ce concert, filmé pour Halloween au Paramount Theatre de Seattle, épicentre de l'explosion grunge du début des années 1990, représente un tournant pour Nirvana. C'est la première grande salle du groupe, considéré comme underground encore quelques mois plus tôt : les images, d'une qualité rare pour l'époque, montrent trois jeunes musiciens encore inconscients de l'empreinte qu'ils laisseront bientôt sur la musique. Mais comme à toute chose malheur est bon, c’est de ces expériences qu’elle puise l’inspiration de son sixième album Lotus, sorti en 2025. Album le plus intime de sa discographie, Lotus mêle encore une fois les diverses influences de l’artiste, allant jusqu’à lorgner du côté du post-punk.
