"Maus" - The Book they want to be banned - What you can do for yourself - Politicians hate this trick

Art Spiegelman's comic "Maus" is about the time of the Third Reich in Germany. The central character of the story is Spiegelman's father, Wladek (1906-1982), a Holocaust survivor. In numerous sessions, the father tells his son the story of a survivor, as the subtitle of the book is called; the comic thus addresses both the Holocaust and the painful memory of it. Spiegelman puts the story told by the father down on paper, not without going into the current situation of the narrating father, who has developed into a reclusive, stingy and stubborn old man and, despite his Holocaust experiences, discriminates against black people. The difficult relationship between son and father and the suicide of the mother are also taken up as topics.
The story is told as a fable. Through the animal metaphor (and the medium of comics), Spiegelman keeps his distance from the horror that is being told:
“I need to show the events and memory of the Holocaust without showing them. I want to show the masking of these events in their representation." (Spiegelmann, quoted from James E. Young)
In January 2022, it was announced that a school board in McMinn County, Tennessee, made a decision the previous year to ban the use of the comic in the classroom. The ten-member panel unanimously voted to ban the comic from classrooms after initially discussing partial censorship.
However, the book makes an important contribution to looking into this time and not forgetting it. With more and more schools talking about banning certain books, it's time to think about what to do about it. The simplest trick politicians hate: buy the book yourself. This is how this important cultural asset is preserved.

Grand bien lui a pris : elle lançait sans le savoir une très jolie carrière, inaugurée véritablement en 2008 par le soutien de My Major Company puis en 2011 par la sortie de son premier album : Letter to the Lord. Démontrant très tôt un vrai talent pour la musique, la jeune femme se fait d’abord remarquer en postant des reprises sur Youtube. Rapidement, elle s’essaie à la scène en rejoignant un groupe. De premières expériences qui lui permettent aujourd’hui de se présenter en son (pré)nom propre. C’est grâce à « Call Me Back », un morceau acoustique, que Dora commence à percer. Depuis, la chanteuse profite de chaque nouvelle sortie pour ajouter de nouvelles couleurs à sa palette musicale : pop, rock, electro, r’n’b… Tout se marie à merveille à cette voix veloutée chantant aussi bien en espagnol qu’en anglais. C’est dans une église de Groningen, la Aa-kerk pour être plus précis, que nous avons retrouvé Dora. Dans ce cadre atypique, l’artiste interprète quelques-unes de ses compositions : « La Nana (Para mamà) » et « Flore de Abril ». On se laisse toucher par la grâce. On plonge dans l’univers R’n’B de Gaia au cours d’une session enregistrée dans l’EMG Faktors, une ancienne usine reconvertie en lieu culturel. A eux cinq, les Britanniques font pas mal de bruit (en termes de décibel comme de succès), c’est le moins que l’on puisse dire. Les sales gosses de Shame ont en effet frappé très fort dès leur premier album : paru en 2018 sur le label Dead Oceans, Songs of Praise a vite valu au groupe d’être comparé aux incontournables Fat White Family. Difficile il est vrai de résister à leur post-punk navigant entre hargne et flegme, dans un style on ne peut plus britannique. Il y a quelques mois, les petits gars de Shame nous avaient reçus dans leur jardin, à Londres, pour une petite session Long Distance Call. L'Opéra de Lausanne présente l’opérette à succès de Ralph Benatzky dans sa version française très appréciée de Paul Bonneau, somptueusement mise en scène par Gilles Rico et sous la baguette de Jean-Yves Ossonce. A l’Auberge du Cheval blanc, les choses s’enflamment : un marchand marseillais en voyage avec sa fille s’y installe pour les vacances d’été et, plutôt que calme et tranquillité, y trouve le fils de son plus grand concurrent. Tandis qu’entre la tenancière du Cheval blanc, Josefa, et son fidèle client Maître Florès, c’est visiblement plus qu’une amitié qui s’installe – au grand dam du maître d’hôtel Léopold, dont le cœur bat justement pour sa patronne. Les bons conseils y deviennent vite très chers et c’est finalement à l’Empereur François-Joseph en personne de dénouer la situation. Dans L’Auberge du Cheval blanc, l’authentique folklore des Alpes autrichiennes se mêle à la légèreté des opérettes viennoises et à l’exubérance des théâtres de revue berlinois. Cette œuvre est qualifiée en Outre-Rhin de Singspiel, genre comparable à un opéra-comique à l’allemande. Après la création de Berlin en 1930, elle jouit d’un succès international. Le régime nazi l’inscrit sur la liste de ce qu’ils appellent l’« art dégénéré ». C’est principalement grâce à l’engouement pour les Heimatfilme, films de genre germanophones à sujet simple et rural, dans les années 50, que la pièce connaît sa grande renaissance dans les cinémas et salles de théâtre, aussi bien allemands qu’internationaux. Ainsi, entre 1948 et 1968, son adaptation française par Paul Bonneau a été représentée au Théâtre du Châtelet plus de 1 700 fois. C’est précisément cette adaptation en langue française que nous proposent le chef d’orchestre Jean-Yves Ossonce et le metteur en scène Gilles Rico sur la scène de l’Opéra de Lausanne, dans une réalisation visuelle luxurieuse et une patte sonore très colorée. Outre des changements de nom et des divergences dans l'intrigue, la version française contient deux compositions de la plume de Robert Stolz absentes de la version allemande. Fabienne Conrad et Mathias Vidal tiennent les rôles principaux de la patronne Josefa et du maître d‘hôtel Léopold. À leurs côtés, Patrick Rocca joue le marchand marseillais Napoléon Bistagne, Clémentine Bourgoin sa fille Sylvabelle et Julien Dran l'avocat Maître Florès. Un ensorcelant voyage dans l’univers du mélomane Stanley Kubrick. Découvrez les musiques qui ont marqué des générations de spectateurs. "À moins que vous ne vouliez de la musique pop, il est vain d’employer quelqu’un qui n’est pas l’égal d’un Mozart, d’un Beethoven ou d’un Strauss pour écrire une musique orchestrale", jugeait Stanley Kubrick lors d’un entretien avec Michel Ciment. L’histoire est connue : pour 2001 : l’odyssée de l’espace, la MGM l’obligea à s’associer au compositeur Alex North. Lorsque ce dernier livra sa partition, le réalisateur la rejeta et imposa au studio les œuvres préexistantes qu’il avait lui-même sélectionnées. Par la suite, fidèle à sa ligne de conduite, il continua à faire de la musique, essentiellement classique, un élément central de son cinéma, notamment dans Barry Lyndon, dont la bande-son a marqué des générations de spectateurs.
