Filmé dans un noir et blanc ampli d’humilité, La Liste de Schindler appelle au devoir de mémoire et met en scène de façon brillante les zones grises de son protagoniste, tantôt sympathisant nazi insouciant, tantôt sauveur rempli de regrets. Un drame humain et historique bien loin des blockbusters auxquels Spielberg nous habitue déjà au mi-temps des années 90. C’est de cette volonté de sobriété et de respect que naît l’idée de la bande originale pensée par John Williams, qui a failli ne pas la composer du tout sous le poids de son sujet. Suggérant à Spielberg “un meilleur compositeur”, ce dernier lui aurait répondu “Je sais… mais ils sont tous morts.” Le résultat : une B.O. courte, soulignant des moments-clés du film sans jamais chercher à illustrer l’horreur, mais plutôt les moments d’espoir et d’humanité. Véritable dépositaire du cinéma hollywoodien du XXème siècle, John Williams a signé quelques-unes des BO les plus marquantes de l’Histoire. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Superman, Indiana Jones : à chaque génération son thème inoubliable. Ce sens du grandiose, il le doit aussi bien à l’image qu’au son : fruit d’une nouvelle collaboration après Les Dents de la Mer, E.T. et la trilogie Indiana Jones, la musique de Jurassic Park est encore une fois signée John Williams. Tantôt d’une spectaculaire lenteur pour accompagner la première rencontre entre les docteurs Grant, Sattler et un troupeau de brachiosaures, tantôt pleins d’espoir et de promesses lors de l’arrivée des personnages sur l’île perdue d’Isla Nublar, les thèmes imaginés par le compositeur américain ne manquent ni de grâce, ni de joie - un effet ayant surpris le compositeur lui-même lors de l’écriture ! Empêché par le tournage de La Liste de Schindler en Pologne, Spielberg a avoué regretter de ne pas avoir pu assister aux séances d’enregistrement d’une bande originale devenue aussi culte que le film dont elle est tirée. Désireuse de maintenir le patrimoine musical de sa terre natale bien vivant et de le faire découvrir au plus grand nombre, Ganna nourrit sa musique de voyages de recherche dans différentes régions d’Ukraine. Un an à peine après la fructueuse collaboration autour des Aventuriers de l’Arche perdue, premier volet de la saga Indiana Jones, Steven Spielberg fait à nouveau appel à l’immense compositeur américain pour mettre en musique son nouveau film, E.T., l’extra-terrestre, sorti dans les salles en 1982. Une grande histoire d’amitié intergalactique, racontant les mésaventures d’un petit extra-terrestre échoué dans la banlieue de Los Angeles et comptant sur le jeune Elliott (incarné par Henry Thomas) et sa famille pour l’aider à rentrer chez lui. Succès fulgurant, E.T. deviendra le film le plus rentable de tous les temps onze ans durant, avant de se faire détrôner par un certain Jurassic Park (1993). Côté B.O., John Williams signe à nouveau un thème hors du temps, illustrant parfaitement la part de magie, de naïveté et de poésie galactique véhiculée par le long-métrage. Pour sa sixième collaboration avec Spielberg, le compositeur a pu s’appuyer sur une autre expérience similaire, celle de Rencontres du troisième type, sorti quelques années auparavant. C’est le réalisateur qui, par la suite, créera la séquence à partir de la composition. Véritable dépositaire du cinéma hollywoodien du XXème siècle, John Williams a signé quelques-unes des BO les plus marquantes de l’Histoire. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Superman, Indiana Jones : à chaque génération son thème inoubliable. Enregistré intégralement en analogique, The Cinnamon Show distille une musique toute aussi classieuse que chaleureuse qui n’est pas sans évoquer l'œuvre de Curtis Mayfield. Les albums du maître de Chicago figurant d’ailleurs parmi les disques que le père de Milewski - saxophoniste sur des bateaux de croisière - lui ramenait de ses voyages transatlantiques avec les paquets de chewing-gum à la cannelle qui inspireront le nom du groupe. Accompagné de six autres musiciens sur scène, Milewski vient donc présenter cet album en live à ESNS, confirmant qu’en termes de soul, la Pologne n’est pas en reste.
